Cannae

Duration: 1h30 – 2h

Introduction: August 2nd, 216 BC: a date that echoes like a thunderous drumbeat in Roman history. Near the ancient town of Cannae, nestled in the countryside between the Ofanto River and the Murge hills, the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca delivered Rome its most devastating defeat ever.
A tactical masterpiece. A bloodbath. A lesson in strategy still studied in military academies today.
But Cannae is more than just the stage of the most famous battle of the Second Punic War. It’s a place that has lived through and withstood the centuries, leaving behind archaeological traces that tell a story spanning millennia — from Daunian villages, to Roman times, through the Middle Ages and beyond.
Our visit will take you through the grandeur and tragedy of those epic moments, as well as the everyday life of a settlement that has known glory, destruction, rebirth… and silence.

Tour route: The tour starts inside the Antiquarium, a small but fascinating exhibition featuringarchaeological finds and informative panels about the battle and the site. Here, you can watch a clear and engaging 15-minute video that reconstructs the clash between the Carthaginian and Roman armies.
Next, we move to the medieval Citadel: remains of religious, military, and civil structures that testify to a period long after the battle.
Finally, we end at a scenic viewpoint where, with the help of your guide, you’ll imagine the phases of the battle — which most likely took place on the plains near the Ofanto River.
“But most likely, Fabio?” you ask. Yes, there are those who argue the battle happened elsewhere — and we’ll talk about that too. But, as Hannibal himself taught us, it’s how you move that matters… not where you stand.
